Violence and causes of death in South Africa
The incidence of violent deaths in South Africa is alarmingly high. No fewer than 38,77% of all cases of unnatural death in 2005 were due to violence/ homicide, and almost the same percentage (38,78%) due to accidents of which the majority was due to road accidents. Almost 10% of unnatural deaths were due to suicide. These figures are according to the publication, A profile of fatal injuries in South Africa, the Seventh Annual Report of the National Injury Mortality Surveillance System in 2005.
